Summary


When we visited the Royal Palace, or Kungliga Slottet, in the summer in Stockholm, Sweden, we were impressed by the emphasis on history and the lavish decor. Some kind of fortress or castle has stood on the palace site since the 11th century.

After a Renaissance castle burned down in 1697, the present castle was built in a baroque style, and in 1754, King Adolf Fredrik moved in. The exterior, painted burnt orange, has Italian elements, and the interiors have French touches, somewhat subdued to fit Swedish tastes. The palace has 608 rooms decorated by Europe's leading artists and craftsmen.
