When the warship Vasa keeled over and sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, it was one of the worst disasters in Sweden's history. For years, the Swedes tried to obliterate the memory. Now the recovered boat, a virtual time machine for its period, is the most treasured and visited attraction in Stockholm.

As we toured the Vasa Museum in July, we found it remarkable how the passage of time can reverse perceptions.
