Leslie Slade of Columbia has always taught her son that Christmas is about love and family, but she also knows it's nice to wake up with a little something under the tree on Christmas morning.

So in years such as this one, when she's been out of work and unable to afford luxuries, Slade has turned to the Voluntary Action Center for help. Over the years, the center has allowed her to give gifts to her now-16-year-old son and buy extra food for a holiday spread.
