I still remember the first time I was invited by American friends to watch football on TV one Sunday. That was an afternoon full of surprises for me.

The first came when my hosts turned on the TV, and I saw these giant men wearing heavily padded uniforms and what looked like motorcycle helmets, in teams that lined up facing each other and then violently crashed into each other on a grassy field striped with white lines about every 10 meters. This wasn't the football I grew up playing and watching, which I soon found out everyone on this side of the Atlantic called "soccer."
