Missouri Wrestlers Advance ; Schavrien, Bradley Stay in Title Hunt.

Summary


The Missouri wrestling team stood in 16th place after the first day of the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia. MU's Todd Schavrien and Dom Bradley went 2-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals at 141 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.

The 10th-seeded Schavrien beat Rutgers' Trevor Melde 7-3 and Pittsburgh's seventh-seeded Tyler Nauman 3-1. The fifth-seeded Bradley had a pair of 3-2 decisions over Boise State's J.T. Felix and Wisconsin's 12th-seeded Eric Bugenhagen. The latter victory came in a tiebreaker after a scoreless sudden-victory overtime period. Tenth-seeded freshman Alan Waters was upset by Pitt's Anthony Zanetta 7-2 in the first round but stayed alive with a 5-4 win over Navy's Aaron Kalil at 125. At 133, Nathan McCormick lost his opener before beating Liberty's Thomas Mitchell 6-2 to stay alive.
