150 Years Ago: Paper Decries 'Shoddy' Uniforms

Summary


BOONE COUNTY -- A Union force of about 600 foot soldiers and 100 mounted men, the largest Federal unit yet to enter Boone County, marched toward Columbia from Jefferson City.

The 5th Iowa Infantry, under Col. William Worthington, was marching on the Rocheport road when a scout, Robert Harris of Laclede County, "was accidentally shot in the shoulder by his own gun, making a frightful wound from which it is thought he will not recover," the Columbia Missouri Statesman reported. Harris was taken to the home of Arnett White and tended by physician Fayette Clapp.
