COLUMBIA -- The pivotal battle for the future of Missouri loomed just ahead, and Maj. Gen. John Fremont's reputation, as well as that of Maj. Gen. Sterling Price, depended on the outcome, William Switzler wrote in the Columbia Missouri Statesman.

Switzler, one of the more influential editors in the state, noted that although Price might have as many as 35,000 to 40,000 men under arms in the Missouri State Guard, another victory like that won Sept. 20 at Lexington would be difficult.
